MEMENTO MORI: LIFE & DEATH: Two sides of the same coin
"Memento mori" is a Latin phrase that dates back to ancient times. Roman generals returning from victory were whispered in their ear "memento mori" to remind them that success and life are temporary. The concept of "memento mori" was later explored in all art forms during the Middle Ages and the Reinaissance, reflecing the religious focus of the afterlife, sin and salvaltion. As an exmple, in literature we have Dante Aligheri's Divine Comedy. In visual arts "memento mori" was represented by symbols associated with death, decay and the passage of time like skulls, hourglasses, extinguished candles, bones, etc. As an example we have Vincent Van Gogh's Skull Of A Skeleton With Burning Cigarette (Expressionism).
What I wanted to capture in this hat is the spiritual meaning of "memento mori." it encourages mindfulness and reflection on what truly matters in life. By confronting mortality, "memento mori" asks people to live with a purpose and align their actions to their values. Also, appreciate the present moment knowing that life is not guaranteed. It's a call to live a fuller life with the awareness that death is an inevitable part of the human existence. LIFE & DEATH: Two sides of the same coin.
